Papal Award for Dr. Noel Donnelly

On Friday 27thMay Dr Noel Donnelly, a former Marist Brother, was awarded the papal knighthood of St Gregory in the parish of St. Leo the Great in Glasgow. Noel did his noviciate in Athlone from 1948 - 1950. He later taught in St. Joseph’s College, Dumfries, where he became the Deputy Principal. He left the Brothers in 1971, and continued to work in Catholic Education in Edinburgh. He worked in Craiglockhart Teacher Training College in Edinburgh, specializing in religious education, and completed a Doctorate in Scripture while working as a member of staff.

Noel has contributed to the life of the Church in Glasgow through composing hymns and psalms for worship, and has given training workshops in catechetics and faith development in Scotland and Africa, including Cameroon and Kenya. In recent years Noel has been present at the funerals of the brothers who have died in Glasgow and has played the organ and the clarsach – the Scottish harp – as part of the funeral liturgies.

The award of the Papal Knighthood was in recognition of his service to the Church in the areas of education, faith development and liturgical music. His wife, Kathleen, and three children were present for the award, as well as Brother Brendan and Brothers from Marist House in Glasgow.

Distinction papale pour le Dr Noël Donnelly

Le vendredi 27 mai, le Dr Noël Donnelly, ancien frère mariste, a reçu le titre de Chevalier de St Gregory, dans la paroisse de St Léon le Grand de Glasgow.

Noël a fait son noviciat à Athlone, de 1948 à 1950. Il enseignera ensuite au collège St Joseph de Dumfries dont il deviendra par la suite le directeur adjoint. Il a quitté la congrégation en 1971 et continuera à s’engager pour l’Education Catholique à Edinburgh. Il travaillera notamment au Collège de Craiglockhart d’Edinburgh, un centre de formation pour enseignants, se spécialisera en éducation religieuse et obtiendra le titre de « docteur en Ecritures », tout en étant enseignant et membre du corps professoral.

Noël a contribué grandement à la vie de l’Eglise à Glasgow. Il composera des hymnes et des psaumes pour les célébrations à l’église, organisera des ateliers de formation pour les catéchistes et proposera des rencontres d’approfondissement de la foi en Ecosse et même en Afrique, notamment au Cameroun et au Kenya. Plus récemment, lors du service de funérailles de l’un ou l’autre frère décédé à Glasgow, Noël était toujours présent pour accompagner les chants à l’orgue et à la « clarsach », c.-à-d. la harpe écossaise.

Il reçut la distinction papale de Chevalier en reconnaissance pour les services rendus à l’Eglise dans les domaines de l’éducation, du développement de la foi et de la musique et des chants liturgiques. Sa femme, Kathleen, ses trois enfants, comme aussi le frère Brendan et des frères du Mariste House étaient présent lors de la remise de la distinction.

Päpstliche Auszeichnung für Dr. Noel Donnelly

Am Freitag, 27. Mai 2019, erhielt Dr. Noel Donnelly, ein ehemaliger Maristenbruder, die päpstliche Auszeichnung „Knighthood of St. Gregory“ in der Pfarrei St. Leo der Große in Glasgow. Noel machte von 1948 – 1950 sein Noviziat in Athlone (Irland). Später unterrichtet er am St. Josephs College in Dumfries, wo er Stellvertreter wurde. Er verließ die Brüder im Jahr 1971 und arbeitete dann am Katholischen Erziehungszentrum in Edinburgh. Er wurde danach ins Lehrerausbildungszentrum Craiglockhart in Edinburgh berufen, das für religiöse Erziehung spezialisiert ist und vollendete seine Promotion in der Bibelwissenschaft, blieb aber Mitglied des Lehrerkollegiums.

Noel trug zum kirchlichen Leben in Glasgow dazu bei, dass er Hymnen und Psalmen zur Anbetung komponierte und in Schottland und in Afrika, eingeschlossen Kamerun und Kenia, Workshops für Katechetik und Glaubensentwicklung anbot. In den letzten Jahren nahm Noel an den Beerdigungen von verstorbenen Brüdern teil, wo er Orgel und schottische Harfe beim Requiem spielte.

Die päpstliche Auszeichnung wurde ihm in Anbetracht seines kirchlichen Dienstes in Erziehung, Glaubensentwicklung und liturgischer Musik verliehen. Seine Frau Kathleen und deren drei Kinder waren bei der Übergabe der Auszeichnung anwesend, ebenso Frater Brendan und Brüdervom Maristenhaus in Glasgow.
