Education Mass in Dundee

On 6th June Brothers Brendan Geary, Robert Thunus and Wilfrid Harrison travelled to Dundee to visit the staff and students of St. John’s High School, and to participate in the Education mass on Dunked Diocese, which was held on the feast of our founder. The Head Teacher, Fiona McLagan, and deputy Head Teacher, Kenny Black, along with Mr David Cecil and Mr John Paul Cecil, prepared lunch for the visitors and took time to introduce them to other members of staff.

Brother Robert Thunus also officially handed over the statue of Fr. Champagnat which was brought from France to Hetland House juniorate in Dumfries in the 1950s. It was later taken to Kinharvie House in Dumfries, then to Marist House in Glasgow, before being given to St. John’s High School.

Brothers Robert, Brendan and Wilfrid visited Brother Douglas Welsh, who recently fell, preventing him from participating in the Education Mass. He was also not able to travel to Dumfries for the Commemoration Service the following day. Brother Douglas worked in Dumfries and Dundee for many years. Many people regretted that he was not able to be present at these events.

Participation in this mass was particularly significant, as the mass was led by the staff and students of St. John’s High School. In his sermon, Monsignor Ken McCaffrey, VG, said:

Today, St. John’s High School host our mass on this feast of St. Marcellin Champagnat, founder of the Marist brothers, who made an important contribution to education here in our diocese, teaching in rooms under this very cathedral, just 20 years after St. Marcellin died in 1840, the first Catholic school in our diocese.

Students of St. John’s introduced the mass and were responsible for readings and prayers. The school brass band led the music that was part of the liturgy.

The visit provided a fitting occasion to introduce Brother Robert Thunus to St. John’s High School, and for Brother Brendan to formally end his years of contact as Provincial. Brother Brendan was a member of staff at St. John’s High School from 1982 – 1985.

Am 06. Juni fuhren die Brüder Brendan Geary, Robert Thunus und Wilfrid Harrison nach Dundee, um das Lehrerkollegium und die Schüler der St. Johns-Hochschule zu besuchen und auch am Gottesdienst der Schule teilzunehmen, der am Fest unseres Gründers gefeiert wurde. Die Schulleiterin Frau Fiona McLagan und ihr Stellvertreter Kenny Black bereiteten mit Herrn David Cecil und Herrn John Paul Cecil für die Besucher das Mittagessen vor und nahmen sich Zeit, den Gästen auch andere Mitglieder der Lehrerschaft vorzustellen.

Frater Robert Thunus übergab offiziell die Statue von Marzellin Champagnat, die 1950 von Frankreich zum Juvenat in Hetland – Dumfries gebracht wurde. Später wurde sie ins Kinharvie-Haus in Dumfries gebracht, dann in das Maristenhaus in Glasgow und wurde schließlich an die St. John-Sekundarschule gegeben.

Frater Robert Thunus, Brendan und Wilfrid besuchten auch Frater Douglas Welsh, der vor kurzen hinfiel und somit nicht an der Schülermesse teilnehmen konnte. Daher konnte er auch nicht am folgenden Tag nach Dumfries fahren, um dort an der Gedenkveranstaltung teilzunehmen. Frater Douglas hatte ja viele Jahre in Dumfries und in Dundee gearbeitet. Viele Leute bedauerten, dass er nicht an diesen Ereignissen dabei sein konnte.

Es war schön, dass die Brüder an der Messe teilnehmen konnten, wurde sie doch von der Lehrer- und Schülerschaft vorbereitet. In seiner Predigt sagte Msig. Ken McCaffrey:

„Heute bereitete die St. John-Schule die heilige Messe aus Anlass des Festes vom heiligen Marzellin Champagnat, der Gründer der Maristenbrüder, vor. Die Schule brachte einen wichtigen Beitrag für die Erziehung in unserer Diözese und unterrichtete in den Räumen bei dieser Kathedrale, zwanzig Jahre nach dem Tod vom Hl. Marzellin im Jahr 1840. Es war die erste katholische Schule in unserer Diözese.“

Schüler der Schule machten die Vorbereitung und übernahmen Lesungen und Gebete. Die Schulband trug mit ihrer Musik zur Liturgie bei.

Der Besuch gab eine gute Gelegenheit, Frater Robert Thunus an der St. John-Schule als neuer Provinzial vorzustellen und für Frater Brendan zu seinem Ende als Provinzial Frater Brendan war Mitglied der Lehrerschaft der Schule von 1982 – 1985.

Dundee

Le 6 juin dernier, les frères Brendan Geary, Robert Thunus et Wilfrid Harrrison se sont rendus à Dundee pour assister à la messe en l’honneur de notre Fondateur. Ils ont profité de ce déplacement pour rencontrer la direction, les membres du corps professoral et des étudiants du St John’s High School. Le frère Robert a remis lors de la cérémonie une statue du Père Champagnat aux responsables du Collège. Cette statue, amenée durant les années 50 de France, avait été offerte au Hetland House juniorate (juvénat) de Dumfries. Elle fut ensuite récupérée par la communauté de Kinharvie à Dumfries et plus tard par le « Marist House » de Glasgow. Les frères Brendan, Robert et Wilfrid ont rendu visite au frère Douglas Welsh qui suite à une chute malheureuse avait été empêché d’assister à la célébration à l’Eglise comme aussi au service de commémoration à Dumfries. Fr Douglas a enseigné de nombreuses années dans ces deux collèges et beaucoup de personnes présentes à Dundee ont regretté son absence. La messe, basée sur le thème de l’Education était animée par des professeurs et des étudiants du « College St John ».

La visite à notre Collège de Dundee fut une bonne occasion pour le frère Robert Thunus de rencontrer la direction et quelques professeurs du St John’s High School. Ce fut aussi pour le Brendan l’occasion de faire ses adieux comme supérieur provincial à ses anciens collègues, car il a enseigné dans ce collège de 1982 à 1985.

Le lunch servi aux visiteurs avait été préparé par la directrice de l’école Mme Fiona McLagan, son adjoint Kenny Black et par Mr David Cecil et John Paul Cecil.
